This part of the site gives information to help you care for your health. It tells you:
- How to get immediate medical advice.
- How to register with a GP.
- Where to see a doctor if you are not registered with GP.
- Where there are Day Care Centres where you get advice on health. You may also be able to get food, see a dentist or get advice.
Please Note!
In cases of emergency you should dial 999 and ask for an ambulance.
An emergency is when you need treatment immediately due to a serious accident or illness.

1. Finding a GP (General Practitioner)
Your GP should be the first place you go for your health care. You do not need to have an address to register with a GP.
You can get help to find a GP to register with by calling NHS direct or the Health Authority Health Shop on 02077167078 or 02077167083.
To see your GP you should ring the surgery to make an appointment or ask for advice. Outside of the surgery's hours your GP will have made alternative arrangements for emergencies - there will be a message on an answering machine at the surgery.
2. NHS Direct
If you have a medical problem and you are not sure what to do you can call NHS direct 24 hours a day on 08454647. This is a telephone advice service operated by professional NHS staff.
NHS Direct can tell you:
- Whether you should attend A & E
- How to obtain emergency contraception
- Help or advice in finding and registering with a local GP
3. Accident and Emergency
If you need urgent treatment you may attend an Accident and Emergency department (A & E) at one of the hospitals listed here.
Urgent means when you need treatment immediately or within 24 hours. A & E departments are open 24 hours everyday of the year.

6. Your mental health
If you are going through a personal crisis and need urgent emotional support you can phone The Samaritans, 24 hours a day on 03459090.
You may also approach your GP, call NHS direct or attend one of the day care centres that offer a mental health service.
7. Dental health
To register with a dentist you should call in to the surgery and ask for details. You may want to make sure the dentist accepts NHS patients. You should then go to this dentist for all your dental health needs.
Like your GP they will have special arrangements for urgent treatment when the surgery is closed. If you are not registered with a dentist and you need urgent treatment you may attend an emergency dental clinic at one of the following hospitals:
